Calliope - The Muses

Description

This is the first of my new themed project where I paint the portraits of the 9 Greek muses.  I know I've attempted it once before, but I had lost interest after painting two...but not this time!  This time I have a purpose, which is to convey the concept of each muse through design and portraiture.  Here's some quick facts about Calliope, Muse of Epic Poetry and the Chief of all Muses:

- She is portrayed with some medium to record her writing, such as a writing tablet, a scroll, or a book.
- She is depicted with a gold crown at times.
- During a sing-off with the 9 daughters of the King of Thessaly, known as the Pierides and trained to rival the Muses, Calliope and her girls beat the cheap knock-offs with their superior knowledge of music.  The Pierides were then transformed into magpies by Calliope for their insolence.
- She is believed to be the muse for Homer's Iliad and the Odyssey.

Critiques are appreciated!

Edit:// So for some reason, I couldn't continue this series.  Not inspired enough I guess.  I do have a bunch of sketches of other muses I wanted to work on, but I just lost interest.  For shame!  The Muses are ironically not giving me inspiration.

It's awesome you're starting a project! :] This is a great portrait! She looks beautiful and her eyes are especially lovely. I think the blurring of the objects in the foreground are a nice touch.
I can see there's a bluish reflected light on her nose & earrings-- I think it looks good and makes her nose pop more. Is there any reason you decided not to paint it on other areas, like her chin, jaw, and beneath her eyebrows?
There also seems to be a white rim light on her jaw and the sides of her neck--maybe it's helpful to remember that rim light really only occurs if the light is coming from behind the character, and it has a tendency to make objects look flat so use it wisely. c:
But you did a wonderful job on this one and I can't wait to see the next pieces!
